The Kickin Grass Band

TThe Kickin Grass Band CD –

On The Short Rows

This Raleigh, North Carolina group combines old time and bluegrass with a fresh, and, yes, kickin’ sound. Only two of the thirteen songs are traditional, and eight of them are written by band members. But all have an Americana feel as if they have been played up in the mountains for years. With fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and bass the band can burn on an instrumentals like “Cloverleaf” and “Pot Liquor” (there are guests on dobro and clawhammer banjo). They also do great vocals and harmonies in the old fashioned style. Even on the wistful ballads sung by guitarist Lydia Wittig Dawson, their energy comes through full force, not with volume, but with strong playing. If you like the traditional mountain sound but want to hear new material, you will want to pick up this second CD by this five-year-old band.
